Personal Statement
My college journey has been one of growth, discovery, and perseverance. As a Communications major with a minor in Law and Justice Studies at Purchase College, I have developed a deeper understanding of the power of communication and its impact on society. My academic experiences, combined with my personal background and extracurricular involvement, have shaped both my professional aspirations and my perspective on the world around me.
I immigrated to the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, a transition that brought both challenges and opportunities. Adapting to a new country, culture, and educational system required resilience and determination. These experiences gave me a greater appreciation for community and inspired me to become actively involved in my campus and local organizations.
My higher education journey began at SUNY Westchester Community College, where I participated in the Honors College and Program, Student Government Association, and Westchester Programming Board. I also worked in the Disability Services Office, an experience that strengthened my commitment to serving others and advocating for accessibility and inclusion. These opportunities allowed me to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that continue to benefit me today.
I chose to major in Communications because I have always been fascinated by the ways media, messaging, and storytelling influence people's perceptions and decisions. Throughout my coursework, I explored topics such as journalism, strategic messaging, digital platforms, media ethics, and public discourse. At the same time, my minor in Law and Justice Studies allowed me to examine legal systems, public policy, and issues of justice from a critical perspective. Together, these fields have helped me understand the relationship between communication, power, and social change.
Some of the most meaningful experiences in college have come from conducting research and completing projects that connected classroom concepts to real-world issues. Whether analyzing digital platforms, studying the role of journalism in politics, or developing communication campaigns for nonprofit organizations, I learned how academic knowledge can be applied to address contemporary challenges. These experiences strengthened my analytical thinking, research abilities, and confidence as a communicator.
Outside of academics, I have remained involved in organizations such as the Pre-Law Society and my church community. These experiences have reinforced my interest in advocacy, leadership, and public service while providing opportunities to engage with diverse perspectives and meaningful discussions.
Looking ahead, I hope to pursue a career that combines communication, critical thinking, and service to others. My experiences in college have sparked an interest in law and related fields where I can contribute to advocacy, policy, and community engagement. Above all, college has taught me the importance of adaptability, lifelong learning, and using my voice to make a positive impact. As I move forward, I am grateful for the opportunities, relationships, and lessons that have shaped me into the person I am today.
